Moons may not get the same press as planets, but many are too massive to be ignored. In fact, 7 moons are bigger than Pluto and two of those are even bigger
than Mercury. You remember that Galileo spotted the first 4 of Jupiter's moons with his telescope. As people developed more
powerful instruments for space study, more of the planets' moons came into view. Only 5 of Uranus's moons were known before 1986, when Voyager 2 spotted 10 more. In late 1997, 2 more moons popped up in powerful telescopes, and an 18th in 1999 was the result of a reexamination of a 1986 Voyager image. The first 15 moons are named for characters in plays by Shakespeare, though not always appropriately. Miranda, named after the young beauty in The Tempest, has a bizarrely scarred surface.

This monster moon,
Ganymede, is the biggest
in the solar system
2
Welcome, craters! Callisto's
heavily cratered surface
comes from being slammed
by meteoroids.
3
Resembling an extra large
pizza with cheese, lo bubbles
with active volcanoes and
fresh lava flows.
4
Can you see the sea? Some
scientists think there may be
a liquid ocean beneath the
icy crust of Europa.
5
Larger than Mercury,
Saturn's Titan is the
only moon with an
atmosphere.
6
Look out below! Someday,
Triton will crash into its
planet, Neptune.
7
Earth's Moon is considered
huge for the size of its planet.

Miranda is the heavily
scarred moon of Uranus.
